You probably would think that rare
coin collecting is for the rich. But is it? However,
fact is that rare coin collecting is a hobby enjoyed by
many people around the world. It is often misunderstood
a being a hobby only for the rich and famous as people will
often associate any rare as being costly and many rich and
famous people do enjoy collecting rare coins. Although this
is true to an extent, the average person with the right
knowledge.
Acquiring The Knowledge
Before you even begin, you must do your research. The best
way to start is to join a club in your local area. This
way you will have a group of people to exchange information
with, thus learning about all the different types of rare
coins and even make some connections with the experienced
collectors that will help you in the future. There are a
great deal of resources out there to help teach people how
to hunt down and correctly bargain for all types of rare
coins all over the planet.
Beware Of Dealers
If you have done your homework and research on the rare
coins, you probably will have an estimate of the
prices of the rare coins. With that in hand, you will be
able to determine what price is reasonable to pay and not
be overcharged by sleazy dealers. Legitimate dealers will
charge you a sum that is twice as much as what the wholesale
price of a coin is worth. What you can do is to offer the
dealer a price below that of the normal retail price. This
will give the dealer the impression that you’re not
there to mess around and you may just get lucky.
To Sell Or To Save
Once you have started your rare coin collecting, there
will come a point in time when you will ask whether or not
to sell some of the coins in their collection. Well, that
really depends on two factors which includes demand for
the rare coin and the size of your collection. That said,
there is no right or wrong answer to this. The world of
rare coins is constantly changing and hence there may be
a high demand for a particular coin one day, and then next
thing you know, people might have forgotten about that coin
and therefore the price of it will plummet.
You must also take into account whether you can afford
to sell your coins. Usually someone with a small collection
of coins should not decide to sell off a major portion of
his/hers holdings. Instead, they should continue to work
on increasing their overall collection, looking for good
bargains and wait patiently for the opportune time to sell.
Thus the best way to describe rare coin collecting is to
say that it is like investing in the stock market. Buy low,
sell high!
